Book challenges have surged across the U.S. since 2020; they have occurred in every state, including Maryland. Although they are often concentrated in public and school libraries, academic librarians need to be concerned, as well. In this talk, we will discuss the current state of book challenges, how this trend pertains to academic libraries, and specific issues in academic libraries. In addition, we will review ways that all librarians can support one another during these challenging times.
Following the keynote, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in small group discussions led by other library workers and information professionals with experience and an interest in information, intellectual, and academic freedoms.

The MLA/DLA Annual Conference is now accepting proposals for the upcoming poster session. This year, we are excited to announce that the poster session will be a hybrid event, accommodating both in-person and virtual posters. This flexibility allows everyone, regardless of conference attendance, to contribute to the conference.
All posters must have a digital version submitted, even if the presenter plans to showcase it in person. While a high-quality photograph of a handmade poster is acceptable, our preference is for submissions to be born digital, in either PNG or PDF format.
For help with creating a conference poster, please check out ACRL MD’s Poster Design Tips page. Along with providing some useful help guides and articles on best practices for creating electronic posters, we also have a recording of our recent workshop “Designing impactful conference posters for librarians”.
Key Dates:
· Proposal Submission Deadline: 4:00 PM on Friday, March 22
· Notification of Accepted Posters: April 5
· Digital Poster Submission Deadline: April 30
During the conference, posters will be displayed from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 9th, and Friday, May 10th. MLA/DLA will provide tables, and presenters are required to bring their own hanging or support structures for their posters. Virtual posters will be displayed alongside physical ones in the same room on a television screen.
If you choose to present your poster in person, we kindly request your presence for questions and answers from attendees during the following times:
· Thursday, May 9th: 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
· Friday, May 10th: 10:45 AM – 11:45 AM
When submitting your proposal, please indicate your intention to attend one or both of these in-person sessions.
